We didn’t care by then about the movie and its obvious wink to what was going on politically at the time. Yet that’s what makes it the all-timer by a nose. And then there’s the ending on a Siberian mountain: “DRAGOOOOOOO!” It’s absurdly over the top, even for Rocky (and no that wasn’t a deliberate Over the Top reference) with Hearts on Fire and hitting you over the head with Rocky going back to basics and Ivan Drago using expensive Russian technology to train.
The original is bested by only one sequence, only because it took the tired format and, um, injected it with a dose of the 1980s. Gonna Fly Now makes you want to leap out of your seat and get into shape, and the now-famous image of Rocky finishing on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art then make you want to cheer for the underdog. If we were ranking all-time movie montages in the century-plus of filmmaking, this would easily be in the top-10. There are clear nods to sequences from past installments, but it’s an emotional take on the montage with Rocky battling alongside Adonis. If you don’t fall off your couch laugh at Creed and Rocky celebrating in slow motion in the ocean, you have no heart. There’s humor (Rocky running with his dog, Paulie trying to lift), but it deserves to be around the middle for repeating the tropes we’ve seen time after time. This sequence is just plain sad, with Rocky ignoring his son while training Tommy Gunn. Rocky VĬan we all just forget the flick was made in the first place? I bet every fan feels that way. This is the height of corny with every kid in Philadelphia running with him and a chorus of young fans singing Gonna Fly Now. I get the symbolism with the kids included - Adrian just gave birth to their son. Sure, it’s kitschy that there’s one in every film in the series, but that’s part of what we love about Rocky.
To celebrate, I’m ranking my favorite parts of the franchise: The training montage, with Rocky or Drago or Mason or Adonis getting ready for the big fight by getting into the best shape of their lives set to iconic music.
